Can Reiki Help With Insomnia?

Depending on its severity, insomnia may present as anything from a slight, temporary annoyance to a completely debilitating condition. People who suffer from insomnia often look to a number of different solutions to their condition, including cognitive behavior therapy, medications and more. Some people with this condition have also found that Reiki can be helpful in restoring normal sleep patterns as well.

Understanding Insomnia

Insomnia is a condition in which a person finds it difficult to fall asleep and/or remain asleep even though he or she has plenty of time to do so. According to the Mayo Clinic, the average adult requires at least seven to eight hours of sleep each night in order to function properly. Without adequate, restful sleep, people often feel tired, sluggish, irritable or even depressed. People suffer from insomnia may also have trouble concentrating on tasks during the day, and they may also be at a higher risk of accidental injury or death. You may be suffering from insomnia if you spend more than 30 minutes attempting to fall asleep on a regular basis, or if you find that you get less than six hours of sleep on most nights.

Causes of Insomnia

Insomnia can result from a number of different causes. The Mayo Clinic reports that common causes of insomnia may include:

  • Overeating before bed
    Eating too much food before bed can cause acid reflux and discomfort, both of which may cause you to stay awake long after you meant to fall asleep.
  • Intake of alcohol, caffeine or nicotine
    Although alcohol is a depressant, it can prevent you from getting the restful sleep you need. Caffeine and nicotine, on the other hand, are stimulants that can stop you from falling asleep well in the first place.
  • Certain medications
    Some medications, such as corticosteroids, may cause insomnia in some patients.
  • Poor sleeping habits
    If your sleeping environment is uncomfortable or if you don’t have a regular sleep schedule, you may find it difficult to fall asleep.
  • Change in environment
    If your schedule or living arrangements have changed recently, you may experience temporary insomnia while you adjust to the changes.
  • Certain medical conditions
    Some medical conditions, such as chronic pain, may make it difficult to fall asleep and stay asleep.
  • Depression
    Many people who are suffering from depression will experience sleep disturbances, including insomnia.
  • Anxiety
    Anxiety is a common cause of insomnia. People who feel anxious often spend time worrying after they go to bed, which can make sleep nearly impossible. This cause of insomnia may be temporary or ongoing.
  • Stress
    Much like anxiety, stress can also lead to the development of insomnia. Whether you are stressed about work, relationships or health concerns, you may find it more difficult to sleep when your stress levels are high.

How Reiki Can Help

How Reiki can help Insomnia

Regardless of the cause of your insomnia, Reiki may be beneficial. In some cases, Reiki may help by assisting to address the underlying cause of the insomnia. In other cases, Reiki may simply help you relax and establish better sleep patterns in spite of the cause of your condition.

If your insomnia is the result of stress, anxiety or depression, Reiki sessions may help to alleviate some of the problem. Some of the ways in which Reiki may help with these issues are detailed below.

  • Reiki is relaxing.
    Reiki often helps clients to relax, thus allowing them to put their problems in perspective and find a sense of mental and spiritual balance. This can lead to reduced stress and anxiety, which may in turn help relieve insomnia.
  • Reiki gives control back to the client.
    People who suffer from stress, anxiety or depression often feel like their life is not in their hands. Clients who participate in Reiki sessions are taking control of their condition, which may improve the symptoms.
  • Reiki facilitates interpersonal connections.
    Clients often feel supported and connected with their Reiki practitioners, who are caring and professional individuals. These interpersonal connections may alleviate the symptoms of depression and other mental problems, thus reducing incidences of insomnia.

Even if your insomnia is not the direct result of depression, anxiety or stress, Reiki sessions may still help you. Insomnia often occurs because of a combination of factors. Regardless of the factors contributing to your condition, relieving stress and restoring your sense of balance may still be beneficial. This is especially true if the cause of your insomnia cannot be addressed directly.

How Reiki can help you get a better night's sleep

Relevant Research

A recent study published in Biological Research for Nursing explored the ability of Reiki to produce a relaxation response. In this study, subjects’ heart rate variability, body temperature and cortisol levels were measured at various intervals before and after Reiki treatment. The study found that, while cortisol levels remained the same, there was a positive effect on heart rate variability and body temperature. This indicated a statistically significant relaxation response.

In another recent study, 15 volunteers who reported frequent episodes of insomnia were taught to use Reiki techniques for self-healing. At the end of the study, researchers found that Reiki improved sleep patterns and decreased episodes of insomnia among the participants. The results of the study also indicated that Reiki promotes stability of the parasympathetic nervous system, as well as calmness.

How Reiki Helps Cancer Patients

Reiki, a stress reduction and relaxation technique, has become a subject of curiosity for cancer patients everywhere. Studies and anecdotal evidence has shown that, in addition to promoting relaxation among patients, Reiki can also be used to encourage healing and provide other benefits. In fact, some studies have even explored the effect of Reiki on patients who are undergoing cancer treatment concurrently. These studies have found that, although Reiki is not a substitute for other cancer treatments, it may enhance these treatments and offer a number of benefits to patients as they deal with the symptoms and stresses of cancer.

What is Reiki?

Reiki is a Japanese practice with a name meaning “universal life energy.” This technique is based on the idea that the practitioner can encourage the flow and free circulation of the client’s own spiritual energy through touch or close proximity. Reiki was largely brought to the west from Japan in the late 1930s by Mrs. Hawayo Takata. Over time, Takata passed her knowledge on to others, and the technique spread throughout the western world.

During a Reiki session, the practitioner gently touches the patient lightly with both hands in specific hand positions or holds his or her hands slightly above the patient. Reiki sessions typically last for approximately one hour. During the session, the practitioner will place his or her hands in up to 15 different traditional hand positions over or on the patient’s body, holding each of the positions for two to five minutes at a time. The treatment is completely non-invasive and requires no tissue manipulation.

How Does it Work?

People who practice Reiki understand that pain and illness in the body are exemplified by blocked energy pathways. The goal of Reiki treatments is to strengthen the flow of energy through these blocked or disturbed pathways, thus decreasing pain and enhancing the body’s natural ability to fight illnesses and heal itself.

For cancer patients, Reiki may be able to help reduce pain associated with the progression of the disease. It can also reduce some of the uncomfortable symptoms patients commonly experience during cancer treatment, such as anxiety, weakness and nausea. Furthermore, Reiki can also improve the patient’s emotional health and outlook, which may increase the patient’s ability and willingness to comply with physician’s instructions and adhere to treatment protocols.

Notable Research

According to the American Cancer Society, a small research study recently showed that patients undergoing Reiki treatments during cancer reported less pain overall. These patients still took the same amount of pain medication, but they reported feeling better when Reiki was part of their treatment regimen. Penn Medicine reports that another study conducted by the Abramson Cancer Center’s Integrative Oncology Initiative showed that Reiki can provide many benefits to patients when performed in conjunction with traditional treatments, including a reduction in patients’ perceptions of pain, decreased stress levels, reduced anxiety and increased relaxation.

Anecdotal Evidence

The American Cancer Society states that there are a number of patient reports supporting the effectiveness of Reiki with regard to refreshing the spirit and improving an individual’s sense of well-being. Many cancer patients who utilized Reiki have also reported less nausea and vomiting after Reiki sessions taken during cancer treatment.

In a recent article, Penn Medicine described the anecdotal experiences of one Reiki patient: Joan Pouch. Pouch was in the middle of treatment for Stage 3 breast cancer when she began using Reiki to help her cope with the symptoms of the disease and the side effects of treatment. According to Pouch, Reiki sessions relaxed her. Pouch also said that Reiki sessions helped to restore her sense of mental and physical balance. In fact, Pouch found the treatments so beneficial that she later became a Reiki practitioner.

Reiki and Cancer Treatments

Because Reiki is a non-invasive technique that causes no side effects or complications, it can be performed on cancer patients at virtually any time following their diagnosis. Whether the patient is newly diagnosed and waiting to begin treatment, is actively undergoing treatment or is in the late stages of cancer and facing a poor prognosis, Reiki sessions may be beneficial. Reiki may also be effective at reducing anxiety and inducing relaxation and balance among patients who are in remission after completing cancer treatments.

However, in spite of its many benefits, it is important to note that Reiki is not a substitute for traditional cancer treatments. Although studies and anecdotal evidence indicate that Reiki can be increase patient comfort levels and enhance healing, it has not been scientifically shown to effectively treat cancer on its own. Thus, patients should view Reiki as one part of a comprehensive cancer treatment plan.

Based on the scientific evidence, as well as the countless positive reports made by cancer patients who have benefited from Reiki, many healthcare professionals now accept this technique as a component of an effective integrative healing or wellness plan for patients with cancer. Coronavirus: Adapting to Change

During this Coronavirus pandemic, humanity is struggling with our survival.  This is a major world event where all humanity is facing our worst fears without exception.  We are all struggling, but some may be more able to adapt to the constant changes during these difficult times, and fare more successfully than others.

The key to successfully surviving this pandemic is the ability to adapt to changes forced upon humanity daily.  Many are unwilling or unable to adapt to the changes of sheltering at home, inability to work, working from home, and homeschooling their children. For these individuals, they may fare poorly.

The first step to adapting to change is the ability and willingness to accept what is happening.  Acceptance is not giving up, but the ability to face the reality before us and continuing with our lives.  Acceptance is about moving forward and continuing with our lives, even if it is inconvenient, unfamiliar, difficult, and frightening. This acceptance takes courage, but all humans have this courage and have the ability to adapt to change. This is the reason for our ability to survive as the dominant specie on earth.

Acceptance comes in many forms.  It can be accepting the lack of physical freedom to travel in public, eating the same foods at home for many weeks, and living with your family members in close quarters.  Another aspect of acceptance is accepting yourself as human.  You may experience meltdowns, but don’t unpack and live there.  You may feel great sadness, fear and panic at different points in your day.  You may feel anger, irritability, resentment, and insecurities in the span of several minutes.  Accept yourself for who you are, forgive yourself, and ask for forgiveness from your loved ones after a meltdown.

Finding acceptance of our reality is the first step to adapting to this change forced upon all humanity during this pandemic.  The second step is the ability to move forward in spite of these constant changes.  Moving forward means you are able to get out of bed, feed yourself and your family, get on the scheduled work conference call on time or file for unemployment, and complete the necessary household chores along with your family.

Here are my ten recommendations for adapting to Coronavirus changes while sheltering at home:

  1. Keep a routine or regular schedule by getting up and going to sleep at the same time each day. Eat meals at regular set times as much as possible. Our minds and bodies need a routine to feel secure and stay healthy, as well as helping our immune system function optimally.
  2. Schedule one activity each day for yourself or your family, such as game night, movie night, date night, etc. as part of a weekly routine.
  3. Keep a regular modified work schedule even if you’re not working.  Write a new resume, look for a job, file for unemployment, give yourself work assignments each day or week to prepare yourself for your return to work, such as learning a new job skill or software program.
  4. If you’re working from home, compartmentalize your work life from your home life as much as possible.  Your work space should be in a different room than your bedroom or living area.  If you don’t have a large home, designate a part of your living area for working, and stick to that space.  If you have a home office, close the door to your work space after work hours, if available, to segregate work time from home time.
  5. Exercise or meditate each day.  Take a walk in your neighborhood for 20 minutes, practice yoga or meditation, work in your yard, clean the house, work in your garden, and/or spend time in nature for grounding and fresh air.
  6.  In addition to eating meals at regular times, eat healthy meals with fruits and vegetables, drink plenty of water every day, and reduce processed foods and refined sugars.
  7. Refrain from reading the news, social media, and browsing the internet near bedtime.  Read a novel/book or listen to calming music immediately before bedtime to relax your mind.  This will help you sleep better by reducing anxiety and fear.
  8.  Get enough sleep each night that you need, and take a short nap during the day if you have difficulty sleeping through the night.
  9. Give yourself time to grieve for loss of our freedom, loss of your loved ones, or loss of  your job.
  10. Give yourself permission to fall off your routine, but remember to get back on as soon as you are able. Be flexible with your schedule as it may change from week to week.

The success of surviving this pandemic is the ability to adapt to changes as they happen. My above recommendations also may change a week or a month from now, but you get the idea about adapting to changes through acceptance.  Like the weather, change is part of life.  Change is the constant.  May you stay healthy and safe during this pandemic, and may you find acceptance to adapt to changes during these difficult times.
