Reiki Energy Therapy Relieves Lower Back Pain and Improves Daily Activities of Patients With Intervertebral Disc Hernia

By Brooke Chang, Certified Reiki Master

The National Center for Biotechnology Information, National Institute of Health (NCBI,NIH) published the results of a clinical trial study conducted to compare the effects of Reiki energy therapy with physiotherapy and drug therapy on managing low back pain and improving daily activities in patients with Intervertebral Disc Hernia (IVDH). Please see Journal of Evidence-based Integrative Medicine article of NCBI, NIH here.

This clinical trial study included 63 participants treated and monitored from July to October 2017. The inclusion criteria for participants were willingness to participate in the study, being literate, and having a herniated disc between the lumbar vertebra confirmed by an orthopedic surgeon using computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging.

The results of this study showed that Reiki reduced the severity of back pain and improved the level of activities among patients with IVDH. Specifically, the results showed that there was no significant difference in the improvement of daily activities in Reiki and physiotherapy groups, but in this regard, the Reiki group had a significant difference with drug therapy, so that Reiki was more effective in improving the activities compared with drug therapy. Pain relief in Reiki group was more than that of the physiotherapy and drug therapy groups, which indicates that this method is more effective in controlling pain and improving the daily activities in the patients with IVDH.

According to the Qi or Ki theory of energy therapy, Reiki opens and balances the centers and the path of energy flow in individuals and improves physical, psychological, and emotional problems.20 Studies show that Reiki reduces pain21 and improves the quality of life.11,13,2224 Therefore, as established in this clinical trial study, Reiki energy therapy is shown to relieve lower back pain and improve daily activities of patients with intervertebral disc hernia.
